Get Organized!

Get Organized!

By:Michael Vande Loo, the SCCS Secondary Counselor
Parents, do you know how you can help your child be prepared to succeed academically?  Students, what can you do to turn your grades into “A’s” or make the “A’s” you are already receiving come a little easier?  Here are a couple of tips to help you get on track to academic success!
  1. The first week of school most teachers will give a list of supplies and an outline/syllabus for each class. These are usually critical to the organizational success of your child in each class. Make note of the deadline for all supplies so that your child may be organized and prepared from day one. Also, read the requirements and rules for each class carefully with your child.
  2. Together with your child choose a place in the home that has adequate lighting, is comfortable for working, and is as free from distractions as possible. (This may not be the child's bedroom these days with stereos, phones, TV's, computers, etc. It could be the kitchen table, den, etc.)
  3. Together with your child set a schedule or time for homework that can be adhered to as consistently as possible. Even if your child "does not have homework," encourage him/her to use this time for reading the paper, writing letters, etc. It is amazing what they remember they have to do if they know they are required to have their study time whether or not they "have homework."
  4. Provide your child with a personal calendar/planner and help transfer important activities onto it. You may also want to post a master calendar or wall chart at home.
  5. If organization is an area of weakness for your child (or for yourself - not everyone has this knack), contact the teacher as soon as possible so that he/she may make appropriate adjustments.
  6. Reinforce with your child the need to not leave school until he/she checks his/her planner, calendar or assignment sheets, making sure that all necessary materials are getting home.
  7. Refer to the student handbook often, making note of the following:
    - Dates of parent/teacher conferences or open house
    - The alphabetical or grade split for Assistant Principals and Counselors so that you know who to contact regarding your child
    - Dates of progress reports (every three weeks) and report cards (every six weeks) so you can be expecting them
  8. Help your child divide the workload and assignments for each class into manageable chunks over a period of time. Help him/her record this time management system into his/her planner.
  9. If homework assignments are taking an excessive amount of time and your child is struggling, make an appointment with the teacher. Special accommodations or level changes may need to be arranged.
  10. Have your child clear out desk drawers and shelves of work, projects, and papers from previous school years. Together, decide on what you would like to keep and make a portfolio of that work to be stored out of the way.
  11. Encourage your child to use self-stick notes on mirrors, doors, and other visible places for reminders.
  12. Provide your child with a "Homework Survival Kit" which can cut down on wasted time spent searching the house for necessary homework supplies and materials. It can be stored in anything portable, preferably in a light-weight container with a lid. It should include materials such as: notebook paper, unlined paper, ruler, calculator, pencils, glue stick, correction fluid, pens, color pencils, etc. You might encourage your child to take it with him/her when they are on errands with you, in transit and so forth so they might accomplish some productive schoolwork during these usually unproductive times.
