SCCS Yuletide Celebration transforms the Library into a stage for aspiring musicians
By Mrs. Rebecca Battisoni, SCCS Librarian

The middle and high school music students put on a holiday concert for the SCCS community December 8, 2009. This year, the concert was held in a new location – the Library.

“The choice to utilize a new space allowed for better acoustics and an overall festive ambience,” said Mr. Edward Wolf, SCCS band director. “This was probably the best band concert in recent years held at the school. Congratulations to all the hard working students.”

In addition to the new location, two new, honorary band members performed. Mr. Taylor Barton, HS English, and Mr. Ryan Kadow, HS Science, added their respective talents on the trumpet and tuba and joined in with the students to perform a series of traditional holiday songs. Other soloists included Jose Mozz, freshman, on Alto Sax and Deborah Bernardes and Julia Monasterio, seventh graders, performing a flute duet.

The concert included the High School Ensemble, made up of five students, and the Middle School Band, 38 students strong. Each student worked to blend their instruments’ sound to create a performance that showcased their talents.

According to seventh grader Mariana de Carvalho, having the concert in the library was a good experience because “you could hear all of the music so much better.” Seventh grader Ivana Matkovia agreed, stating, “There wasn’t an echo and we were much more comfortable. Our parents were closer and could see us better than in the gym.”

The concert goers were also able to view the new art gallery in the Library, which showcases student work. Mrs. Olivia Mercado, Art, and her students decorated with angels, stars and Christmas trees.
